"Dear friends. So it has come to this. The final song from the "This Is Not My Music"-series - "December" - is out. It all started on February 10th earlier this year, and today, on November 10th, I've officially completed the project. "This Is Not My Music" has brought me so much joy and excitement, and I genuienly hope that it has brought you some joy and excitement as well. It's been a good year and I want to thank you so much for being a part of this journey. On December 10th, I am releasing "This Is Not My Music - EP#2", holding the last four songs of the series: "Already Gone", "Home", "After the Storm" and, of course, "December". Elise talks about the new single: "After the Storm" is the seventh single in the series "This Is Not My Music". This one is a little different. When I started working in the studio with Ashley a year ago, "After the Storm" didn't exist. We had picked seven songs and were working on them in their barest form, when Ashley said that the only thing that was missing was a slow song. And by slow, he meant super slow. I figured he wanted to give me a challenge, and I decided I was going to take it. It took me a few days to finish the song. When I got back in the studio we recorded a sketch, and the next day we made the complete version. This was actually the very first song we finished. It was pouring outside while we recorded the guitar parts, and some construction builders were working right outside the studio. You can actually hear traces of it in the song, if you listen carefully. "After the Storm" is different, but I am still very honored and proud to be able to release a song like this. I hope you will like it as well. Sincerely, Elise.." Check out all the singles released in the «This Is Not My Music» project so far:

Elise talks about the new single: I am so pleased to introduce the sixth release of the This Is Not My Music-series, «Home». I wrote this song in my apartment in Brooklyn last year, right before I was about to head back home to Norway. I was feeling excited, sad and nervous at the time. Excited because I was going home to see all my friends and family, sad because I was about to end the greatest journey of my life (so far), nervous because I wondered what kind of expectations people would have. I'd been living in New York for six months, writing and composing new songs, and I sure hoped that people would be interested to hear them. One of the lines in the song goes «What will they think, will they mind, will they even notice». By returning to Norway, I was about to burst the bubble I'd been living in. It was time to bring all of my songs to life, and it felt so good and so nerve wrecking at the same time.
I used my Baby Taylor-guitar when we recorded this song, which is the very first guitar I ever bought. The drums is played by Ole Tollefsen, the bass is played by Simen Ytre-Arne and the rest is done by Ashley Stubbert (the producer) and myself. We also drank a lot of tea during this particular recording. I hope you will enjoy it. Check out all the singles released in the «This Is Not My Music» project so far:

Elise talks about the new single: Already Gone was written along with my friend Paul F. Johannessen in New York City about a year ago. The truth is I've had my ups and downs with this song. The lyrics are describing some of the inside struggles I was having right after moving to New York. I was alone and somewhat confused. It is true what they say - a big city can indeed make you feel very small. I was having some difficulties as far as relating to the city, and I was also having doubts about my music. I needed to figure out a way to approach this whole new situation, and it wasn't going too well. At least not while I was writing this song. I wrote all the verses in New York, and I went home without a chorus. Even though I eventually figured out a solution to my problems and was feeling very much at ease, the song was still a dark piece at this point.
I wrote a new chorus in the studio with Ashley a few months later (the producer), and we recorded a new demo of it. Suddenly there was a shred of hope. The chorus added exactly what the song needed - light, hope, positivity, energy and guts. The darkness and the light went perfectly together. I wanted to record it, and I wanted to share it. So here it is. To you from my bare hands.

Elise Vatsvaag tells us about her latest single:
I can’t believe I’m about to release a fourth single! 4 songs have been released, which basically means I’m halfway through the «This Is Not My Music» project. That is undeniably a fact that makes me feel tingly with joy and excitement. I am also very excited about this fourth single «The Night That I Let Go». Please allow me to explain why. «The Night That I Let Go» is what I would like to call a «travelling tune». It first came to life during a Songwriter’s Circle, which is like a songwriting retreat where you meet up with different writers from across the world and make music together. In 2009 I paired up with Greg Holden, Jeff Cohen and Christian Ingebrigtsen – three excellent writers and amazing people. We wrote a funny song about drinking too much and partying too hard. It was great fun, but I never thought of either performing or recording the song. It was…well, a little over the edge. I could not, however, get some of the lyrical and melodic parts out of my head. In the Summer of 2011 I was going over some old piano tracks that my friend and piano player Paul Fredrik Johannessen had sent me. I found a clip that I immediately fell in love with, and for some reason it made me think of the song I wrote back in 2009 with the boys. I called Paul and arranged a writing session with him. We jammed for a couple of hours, kept some of the melodies and lyrics from the session in 2009, and re-wrote a few things. Suddenly we had a song that sounded great. We called it «The Night That I Let Go». Technically speaking it took three years, five writers, two pianos, two guitars, two cities and two sessions to write this song. Phew. I really hope you will like it. I also wanted to let you know that on June 10th I’m releasing «This Is Not My Music EP#1», which holds the first four songs, «Safe Play», «Vena Amoris», «Neighborhood» and «The Night That I Let Go», and maybe also a surprise. You’ll have to buy it to find out. YES, buy! For the first time I’m asking for a price. For four months I’ve been giving my music away for free. On June 10th I’m releasing the first of two EP’s on iTunes and other digital stores. For those reading this, I hope you got a chance to download all the songs for free. If not, now there’s always a chance to get a hold of them.

For the third single, «Neighborhood», Elise is reaching out to her fans to find a picture to use on the cover. This is her message to you (from her Tumblr blog)
Dear fans! I would love to encourage you to be a part of a silly but meaningful competition in connection to the release of my next single. As you probably know, I am currently in the middle of releasing new music from the series «This Is Not My Music». So far, two singles have been released and on April 10th I’m releasing a THIRD single called «Neighborhood». «Neighborhood» is a song about childhood memories and nostalgia, and, most importantly, the fact that I came from the last couple of years in a generation where we didn’t have that many computer games around. I remember how we would always run around in the streets of our neighborhood, pretending to be princesses or warriors. We had no choice but to be creative, and we basically had to create our own fantasy world. I am so grateful for this time, and I treasure it with all my heart. Unfortunately, I feel like kids nowadays are becoming more addicted to computer games than ever.
So, the competition goes like this! Send me a photo of your best childhood memory. This can basically be anything, your favorite toy, your favorite street, your favorite park, your best childhood friend… whatever really, as long as it is meaningful. The best photo will be chosen as the official single cover for my song «Neighborhood» and you will also get my EP «This Is Not My Music #1» for FREE when it is released on June 10th.
You are probably wondering why I’m asking you to do this, like, Elise…wouldn’t it make more sense if you had your own best childhood memory as a cover? Well, no. Your support means the world to me, and I would love for any of you to be a part of this project. Who’s with me?!
IF YOU ARE, email me your photo (and why it means something to you) at elisevatsvaag at gmail.com, or upload a picture to my Facebook
